Romania Has It All. Part One: Castles

We decided to spend an entire week in Romania. When we told other travelers in Europe that that is what our plan was, they couldn't understand. What's in Romania? Well, if they only knew.

Romania has it all.

Let's start with the castles and fortresses. As far as medieval history goes, this place is one of the best preserved. We only had time to go to the ones in the heart of Transylvania, but it was still great.

Peles Castle was the summer home of the king of Romania in the 19th century and it is one of the most perfectly situated houses in my opinion. I don't have photos of the interior because we didn't feel like paying ten dollars to take photos, but take my word for it, it's so beautiful on the inside. Personally, I would have rather lived here than in Versailles.
Then there is Bran Castle. This castle is what people call "Dracula's Castle," but it has no connection at all to the man who inspired Dracula, Vlad the Impaler. But it's still a sweet castle that sits on the top of the Carpathian Mountains. I wouldn't mind living in this one, either.

Then we went to the nearby town of Rasnov to see their old fortress that was built during the time of Christ. This place had a lot of crazy cool history, and it was one of our favorite spots to see.

Beautiful Mountains
With the captain of the guards! I also like the man smoking a ciggy on the right
So this well is crazy crazy deep. It took Turkish prisoners 17 years to dig it and it was promised that they would be freed when it was done. Super creepy.
You should know that these photos have not been edited or altered. It really was that beautiful

**Side note** I have in fact been to the real "Dracula's Castle" and it is pretty cool and creepy. Unfortunately, we didn't have time to go there so Victor could see it. For visual purposes, here it is:

So, you get the idea. Romanian castles are legit!!

  2. My favorite part of PeleČ™ was the weapons room. And last summer I met a USNA '59 grad at Bran. Crazy small world.
